Rising to 6,740 meters, Mt. Kailash lies in the remote reaches of Tibet, north of the Himalayan range. This strikingly symmetrical mountain is revered by four ancient faiths—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. Known locally as Khang Rimpoche, or "Precious Jewel of Snow," it is considered a spiritual axis of the world and a divine dwelling of the deity Demchog and his consort, Dorje Phagmo.
According to legends, streams from Kailash flow into a sacred lake, giving rise to four rivers in the cardinal directions. Remarkably, this aligns with the actual sources of the Indus, Sutlej, Karnali, and Brahmaputra rivers. The mountain’s deep spiritual power is further sanctified by Tibetan saint Milarepa’s meditation retreat in its caves.
For pilgrims and seekers, the overland route from Kathmandu to Kailash via Kyirong provides a tranquil two-week journey. This path not only offers a deeply spiritual experience but also unveils the stunning landscapes and cultural richness of rural Tibet, ideal for those who prefer a slower, immersive adventure.
